Prostate prevention (PSA) – early detection of changes in the prostate gland. Recommended for men over 45 years of age.
Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by the cells of the prostate gland. Its concentration in the blood increases in benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostate inflammation, after urological procedures, and also in early prostate cancer – a cancer that often shows no symptoms for a long time but is highly treatable if detected early enough. Regular PSA measurement allows for observation of change dynamics over time, which is as important as a single result. A slow, gradual increase, typical of benign hyperplasia, looks different from a rapid increase requiring urgent urological consultation. The examination is supplemented by an assessment of the free PSA fraction, which improves differentiation between benign and cancerous changes. The test should be considered for every man over 45–50 years of age, and as early as 40 years of age if there is a family history of prostate cancer. Indications also include lower urinary tract symptoms: frequent urination, especially at night, a weak or interrupted stream, a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying, and sudden urges. The result is always interpreted in conjunction with a urological examination.
