Serum iron – assessment of iron metabolism for fatigue, pallor, and hair loss. Supplement with ferritin.
Iron is an essential element for the production of haemoglobin, which transports oxygen to all tissues, as well as for the function of myoglobin in muscles and many enzymes responsible for cellular energy production. Measuring serum iron shows its current circulating concentration in the blood. Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide. It manifests as chronic fatigue, pale skin, shortness of breath and heart palpitations during exertion, dizziness, hair loss, brittle nails, cracked corners of the mouth, reduced immunity, and impaired concentration. Women with heavy menstrual periods, pregnant women, individuals on plant-based diets, blood donors, and endurance athletes are particularly vulnerable. Iron excess also has clinical significance – it can indicate hemochromatosis or excessive supplementation and lead to liver, pancreas, and heart damage. As iron levels fluctuate throughout the day and depend on recent meals, the result is best interpreted alongside ferritin, TIBC, and a full blood count – as included in our Comprehensive Iron Panel.
