Single Biomarkers and Oncology Markers
Fasting glucose – a basic marker of carbohydrate metabolism, detects prediabetes and diabetes. Results in 24 hours.
Fasting glucose measurement is the simplest and best-documented method for preliminary assessment of carbohydrate metabolism. Blood sugar levels are maintained within a narrow range by insulin and glucagon; a sustained elevation signals insulin resistance, prediabetes, or type 2 diabetes, while excessively low values may indicate reactive hypoglycaemia or hormonal disorders. Type 2 diabetes often develops asymptomatically for many years, silently damaging blood vessels, kidneys, retina, and peripheral nerves. Symptoms such as increased thirst, frequent urination, post-meal drowsiness, recurrent intimate infections, or slow-healing wounds usually appear late. Therefore, it is advisable to check glucose levels at least once a year, especially after 40 years of age. For a more complete metabolic picture, we recommend combining glucose with insulin (calculation of the HOMA-IR index), glycated haemoglobin HbA1c, and a lipid profile – such a set can be found in our Diabetes Panel.
