Having a blood sample taken from a child can often be more stressful for the parent than for the little one. Good preparation, a calm atmosphere, and a short, punctual appointment ensure the whole process takes just a few minutes.
Recommended tests for children
The most common tests include: a full blood count with differential, ferritin, vitamin D, TSH, and—for recurrent infections or skin symptoms—allergy diagnostics. For teenagers, hormonal and metabolic tests are also frequently recommended.
If an allergy is suspected, it's worth considering the ALEX 2.0 — a single blood draw instead of a series of tests. You can find other options in our test catalogue.
- Full blood count and ferritin — for paleness, fatigue, or lack of appetite
- Vitamin D — especially important in the Scottish climate
- TSH — for concentration and growth issues
- Allergies — for a runny nose, cough, rash, or reactions after eating
How to prepare your child
Calmly explain what will happen, without being scary or promising 'you won't feel a thing'. Make sure they are well-hydrated, as this makes it easier to find a vein. Bring their favourite toy or headphones, and plan something pleasant for after the visit.
If the test requires fasting, choose the earliest morning slot to shorten the time your child has to go without breakfast.
Booking for multiple people
Appointments must be booked separately for each person, but you can choose consecutive 20-minute slots. Results are delivered separately to each individual to ensure confidentiality.
Book your appointments using our booking system or enquire about the range of tests via our contact form.
Costs
Prices are the same as for adults: biomarkers from £39, packages up to £310, ALEX 2.0 £380. A mandatory £25 appointment fee is added to each visit (this covers the blood draw, sample handling, and shipping to the laboratory). This fee is charged per person.
